When I originally planned to start a blog, I had the idea for Letters to My Pancreas. Mostly because my relationship with my own defunct organ has been quite tumultuous, especially as I got older. When I was in college, I faced a variety of health complications, all perpetuated by stress, anxiety, and type 1 diabetes.

So, a professor of mine said I should write it down, because the way I talked about my health issues, no matter how traumatic, difficult, or simply annoying they became, I addressed it with humor.

However, since completing all of the schooling one writer could ever want (and need–nobody needs two masters degrees but here I am), I decided to dedicate a portion of Sincerely, Sarah May to my diabetic experience.

Of course, what type of diabetes blogger would I be if I didn’t share my diabetes story, the bad experiences, the good, and some of the downright comical. And believe me–I have some doozies to share.

I want this to be the space that young women (and men) come to when they have questions they may feel too weird to ask their parents or doctor (but this is by no means medical advice–I’m just a diabetes veteran with 20+ years under my belt). So, if you ever wondered if you were alone needing to carb-up before intimacy or if you ever got your insulin pump tubing stuck on a doorknob, or if you ever suffered an anxiety induced low blood sugar in the middle of a group presentation, welcome to the club. We have sugar-free jello and low fat whip cream. (Is that still what endos are telling patients to snack on?)

I used to be so angry that diabetes and a slew of other medical conditions were part of me. But the moment I decided to take advantage of the situation (by writing about it, laughing about it, and surviving it) it didn’t seem all that bad.

So, if you’re down to laugh, and swap stories with your diabuddy Sarah, here, stick around and welcome to Letters to My Pancreas.
